Samuel Coleridge-Taylor Solo Piano Works

The Undiscovered Piano Works of Samuel Coleridge-Taylor, recorded for the first time by Waka Hasegawa, is a compilation of piano pieces written in the 1900s that until now have lain undiscovered and unrecorded. Metropolis Recordings and Naxos of America are delighted to introduce this extraordinary body of work to the wider world.

Samuel Coleridge-Taylor was born in London in 1875 and developed his extraordinary musical talent at an early stage. At the age of 15 he was admitted to the Royal College of Music where he studied violin. It was in response to a challenge from a lecturer that Coleridge-Taylor wrote one of his most remarkable piano works ‘Hiawatha’s Wedding Feast’. Unfortunately he sold the rights to this for 15 guineas before it had reached its full potential of being known the world over. This led to him spending the rest of his life writing bespoke light-entertainment pieces to make a living. He finally succumbed to pneumonia at the age of 37.

“…we’re indebted to Waka Hasegawa for her sensitive, very capable performances of this music, and the engineers give Coleridge-Taylor a chance to be heard at his best….So if the late-romantic piano repertoire of Dvořák, MacDowell, Paderewski, and the encores on those Stephen Hough piano albums is your kind of thing, give this a try and enjoy it. Pair it with a glass of wine.”

Schubert Piano Duets CD

“This second CD from this excellent double-act fulfils the promise of their first…Tong and Hasegawa constantly swap roles but their exhilarating pianism is wonderfully even.”

John McCabe “Upon entering a painting”

(Two pianos, piano duet and piano solo works by John McCabe)

“…sympathetic and scintillating interpreters.”

– BBC Music Magazine

“Excellent performances… ideal interpreters.”

– Music & Vision

“…Upon Entering a Painting gets the disc off to a splendid start, especially when showcased in an ideal performance that successfully combines expert precision and emotional engagement…Waka Hasegawa gives an alert and responsive reading, alive to every nuance of this meticulously detailed score…Hasegawa’s more unhurried approach pays dividends in terms of allowing each different segment of this highly original, intricately-wrought piece to establish its own character. Sympathetically recorded in clear sound, these performances are both spirited and sensitive. This thoughtfully-planned programme is well worth investigating.”
